84 West Main Street Lane Addition
This project will connect with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) current improvements to the Ross Clark Circle/U.S. Hwy 84 by extending an additional lane westbound to John D. Odom Road. There will be intersection improvements associated with the project, as well as incorporating ALDOT’s Access Management Plan for this corridor. The additional lane will be added to the median side of West Main Street.
This project is funded by the City of Dothan and the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP-II) grant. This grant is managed by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). The City of Dothan received the maximum available ATRIP-II grant funds in the amount of 2 million dollars and is providing an additional estimated 4 million dollars to complete the project. The project is currently being designed by Poly, Inc.
MidSouth Inc. was the low bidder on the project at $5,495,872.16. The project was approved to be awarded by the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) on the June 1st City Commission meeting. A preconstruction conference was held on July 22, 2021. Work on West Main Street associated with the Ross Clark Circle Widening project will be coordinated with this widening project. The additional lanes on West Main Street were restriped and opened up with a lane shift along the westbound lanes of West Main Street from Bel Aire Drive to John D Odom Road the week of the 23rd. The initial work will include median clearing and grubbing. This initial work also includes some curb work and widening in the East bound lane of West Main Street just east of Flowers Chapel Road. The right turn flow through lane off of Flowers Chapel onto Hwy 84 headed East will remain closed the next few weeks. This work is anticipated to be complete within the next few weeks. The lane will be reopened as soon as they complete the widening work on that lane. There is additional signal work and widening that will be required later in the project which may require a portion of the through lane off of Flowers Chapel to be reclosed again for a short period of time. MidSouth began milling some turn lanes in preparation for applying leveling so that they can be used for a future through lane to accommodate the widening. Some clearing west of Woodburn began Thursday of this week and will continue for the next few weeks. Leveling of the milled turn lanes is planned for the week of October 3rd.
Poly, Inc. is planning to work through ALDOT and the City of Dothan to have the project ready for bid in April 2021. Construction is planned to start in August of 2021 and last through Summer/Fall of 2022. It has a 225 working day schedule.
