[ARCHIVED] 2019 Special Olympics World Games

Dothan Leisure Services and the Dothan Area Special Olympics program is proud to announce that athlete Brandi Deese will be competing in the upcoming Special Olympics World Games that will be held in Abu Dhabi, Capital of the United Arab Emirates.  Brandi was selected to compete in the sport of cycling for the 2019 World Games after winning 1st place in 3 cycling events at District Competition and from there she competed on the state level winning 3 gold medals in 3 cycling events in May of 2018.  Brandi attended a week long training camp at the University of Delaware in September 2018 to prepare her for the upcoming games and she has been training locally 3-5 times a week.  

Brandi will be a part of Team USA that will represent the United States at World Games.  Team USA will participate in Host Town Festivities March 8-11, 2019.  The host town program offers the opportunity for athletes to enjoy hospitality, customs and traditions.  It also helps athletes familiarize themselves with their new environment before beginning competition.
Training and Divisioning will be March 12-13, 2019 and Opening Ceremonies will be held on March 14th.  Competition will begin March 15th thru March 21st when the closing ceremonies will be held.  An estimated 7000 athletes from around the world will compete in 24 summer sports.  There will be 170 participating countries, 2600 coaches, 20,000 volunteers and 500,000 spectators taking part in this spectacular event.

Dothan Leisure Services will provide results as Brandi competes at World Games.
