[ARCHIVED] Brownfields Public Meeting: Increasing the Marketability of Shuttered or Abandoned Properties

The City of Dothan is initiating a new project to identify underutilized properties and evaluate them for any potential environmental concerns that may have impacted the property’s use and marketability. The city’s goal is to remove environmental stigmas and the eyesore of shuttered or abandoned properties, which should increase their potential for a higher and better use.

The project will be initiated with a public meeting designed to inform and educate the community with regard to “brownfields” and the value of site assessment and remediation for Dothan and its citizens. The public meeting will also include an opportunity for citizens to provide input regarding the project’s strategy and expected outcomes. All interested citizens are encouraged to attend the Brownfields Public Meeting on Thursday, October 15, from 2:00PM – 3:00PM in the Dothan Commission Chambers located on the 2nd floor of the Dothan Civic Center.

In addition, the City will initiate efforts to identify and engage project support partners from Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) and governmental agencies who have missions aligned with the economic, social, and environmental enhancement of Dothan.

Potential project funding has been identified through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). EPA will simultaneously publish grant application guidelines and the deadline for submission of funding requests, which is anticipated for late December 2015. The Dothan Planning and Development Department will coordinate local efforts on this project and facilitate the development of the EPA grant application.

For questions, please call Dothan’s Planning & Development Department at (334) 615-4410.
